Clara Stella Hüneke's documentary SISTERQUEENS will be the opening film on 10 October. First programme highlights published. Ticket sales start on 28 August 2024.
This year's Dokumentale kicks off with an empowerment highlight: Clara Stella Hüneke's documentary SISTERQUEENS will open the 1st Documentary Film Festival on the 10th of October at the Colosseum Film Theatre in Berlin. The graduation film of the Baden-Württemberg Film Academy documents the hip-hop project of the same name in Berlin-Wedding, which has been supporting girls between the ages of 8 and 18 for eight years. Under the guidance of mentors such as rapper Ebow, the SISTERQUEENS learn the craft of rap and grow together as a community. For the film, which caused a sensation at its premiere at the Munich Film Festival, Hüneke accompanied her protagonists for four years.
Famous people in front of and behind the camera
Viewers can also enjoy films by and about prominent figures from the world of film and art. In THE HEXAGONAL HIVE AND A MOUSE IN A MAZE, Tilda Swinton and Bartek Dziadosz invite us to reflect on the future of learning. D.W. Young's UNCROPPED, produced by Wes Anderson, is dedicated to photographer James Hamilton. His images of New York in the 1970s and 80s have become part of the collective visual memory.
The world of cinema itself is also the subject of productions such as THE LIVES AND DEATHS OF CHRISTOPHER LEE by Jon Spira and GRETA GERWIG: ITINERARY OF A RISING STAR by Pierre-Paul Puljiz - two films that take an entertaining and fact-filled look at the greats of cinema.
VX - Immersive experiences at Dokumentale
The Documentary Film Festival offers an extensive VX programme alongside the classic film format. Visitors are invited to immerse themselves in new worlds and narratives through VR projects and interactive installations. For example, Pedro Rebelos and Frank Delaney's SARC x 20 explores the complex relationships between art, technology and society. The live performance RED REDEMPTION by European Film Award winner Total Refusal takes the capitalist logic of exploitation ad absurdum in a gaming context.
Feminist perspectives are also explored in two VR works. DRAW FOR CHANGE by Mariana Cadenas Sangronis and Mar mar maremoto shows how art can function as an act of resistance. And THE MATRIARX by Julia Bruton invites us to imagine a world where matriarchy has prevailed.
Dialogue and exchange: film, media and literature at the heart of the festival
Filmmakers, artists, writers and audiences come together to discuss current social issues in the conversation format of the D'Salon. A conversation between musician and Holocaust survivor Peter Perez (PEPI FANDANGO by Lucija Stojevic) and singer-songwriter and author Roxanne de Bastion (DIE PIANOKLAVIERIN BUDAPEST) will examine the power that art can have in times of crisis. Experts will also discuss the importance of press freedom at a time of growing censorship, based on the collection BEYOND MOLOTOVS - A VISUAL HANDBOOK OF ANTI-AUTHORITARISM STRATEGIES (published by the International Research Group on Authoritarianism and Counter-Strategies and the collective orangotango) and the films AND SO IT BEGINS by Ramona S. Diaz and OF CARAVAN AND THE DOGS by Askold Kurov.
The (film) titles listed here are only a selection of the extensive programme on offer. The first published titles of the documentary can be found here. More information will be available on the website from 28 August.
Festival Passes go on sale on 28 August
From 28 August, visitors will be able to purchase two different festival passes that will give them access to either all or five selected events during the documentary section - as well as a selection of films that will also be available for streaming. Admission to the VX and the Media Exhibition will be on the basis of a voluntary donation.
