Immerse yourself in a completely different culture - with THE MAKING OF A JAPANESE (18 July, 3.30 pm, KantKino). The documentary follows primary school pupils and teachers in Tokyo for a year. Don’t miss out on the German premiere of NOMAD SOLITUDE (21 July, 6.00 pm, Colosseum) which centers around the issue of female age-related poverty and follows three modern nomads in the US.
Two documentary films are dedicated to musical phenomena. BELLA CIAO (18 July, 20:30, KantKino) sheds light on the history of the world's most famous protest song, which experienced a renaissance with the cult series "House of Money". CATCHING FIRE: THE STORY OF ANITA PALLENBERG (21 July, 20:30, Colosseum) tells us more about Anita Pallenberg - as a model and actress she was much more than perhaps the Rolling Stones' most famous muse.
Art against injustice - that's what PAINTING DHAKA (21 July, 3:30 pm, Colosseum) by Berlin director Lukas Zeilinger is all about. He sprays trains with children in a poor neighbourhood in Bangladesh, revealing corruption and injustice in the process. A THOUSAND CUTS (18 July, 18:00, KantKino) shows the struggle of Philippine Nobel Prize winner Maria Ressa for freedom of the press, while KABUL BEAUTY (German premiere, 20 July, 21:15, Freiluftkino Insel) and SON OF THE MULLAH (18 July, 18:00, Dokumentationszentrum Flucht, Vertreibung, Versöhnung) provide an insight into the lives and daily challenges of people in Iran and Afghanistan. In QUEENDOM (19 July, 7 pm, ACUDKino), the young Russian activist Gena fights against her country's anti-queer laws with radical performances.
A special event at Kater Blau
Art also plays an essential role at the special event "MUSIC, LOVE, RESISTANCE" at Kater Blau (18 July, from 6 pm) on Holzmarkt. For one evening, the club will be transformed into an open-air cinema and invites you to enjoy four short films, music and an aperitif. The films screened include My MY ORANGE GARDEN and VIBRATIONS. MY ORANGE GARDEN finds its very own, self-confident visual language with its protagonist, the musician Faravaz, who fled from Iran, and VIBRATIONS accompanies the deaf dancer Kassandra Wedel, who wanders through the city, records sounds and movements and creates her own music and choreography from them.
A variety of formats for every taste
Alongside the film programme, the Summer Preview also offers various formats that invite you to have a drink and a chat. For example, experts will join us for a Q&A after the film screenings of A THOUSAND CUTS (18 July, 18:00, KantKino) and PAINTING DHAKA (21 July, 15:30, Colosseum).
From 10 to 20 October 2024 the first Dokumentale will take place in Berlin.
