Standing Above the Clouds

Jalena Keane-Lee / United States / 2024 / 83 min

When the construction of a massive, thirty-metre-high telescope on Mauna Kea is proposed, a movement of kiaʻi (Indigenous protectors) in Hawaiʻi and around the world rises up to preserve the sacred mountain. The film follows teacher Pua Case and her two daughters, artist-activists Hāwane Rios and Kapulei Flores, who have been fighting against the telescope since 2010. Their lives are quickly consumed by their protests, court cases, and sacred rituals. Despite resistance and arrests, they are joined by people who have dedicated their lives to protecting Mauna Kea.
